Burt Freeman Bacharach was an American composer, songwriter, record producer, and pianist who is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures of 20th-century popular music. Starting in the 1950s, he composed hundreds of pop songs, many in collaboration with lyricist Hal David. Bacharach's music is characterized by unusual chord progressions and time signature changes, influenced by his background in jazz, and uncommon selections of instruments for small orchestras. The song remains a beloved classic that continues to inspire and move listeners around the world.

What other artists have covered “A House Is Not a Home”?

Following this album, Mendes dismissed the musicians and singer Janis Hansen and brought in Karen Phillip to sing with holdover Lani Hall. The song serves as a powerful reminder that material possessions and physical dwellings alone do not provide us with the comfort and security we need to feel truly at home. Personal connections, emotional support, and love are the true building blocks of a happy and fulfilling life. The song has been covered by many other renowned artists, including Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Mathis, and Barbra Streisand. Each artist has brought their own unique vocal style and interpretation to the song, but the universal message remains the same. Warwick had a close working relationship with Bacharach and David and trusted their songwriting abilities.

The song was recorded by R&B/soul singer-songwriter Luther Vandross on his 1981 debut album Never Too Much. The song’s universal message of longing for connection and belonging strikes a chord with listeners of all ages and backgrounds. In addition, Warwick’s soulful and emotive vocals perfectly capture the song’s melancholic tone. The masterful songwriting of Bacharach and David, with its unforgettable melody and poignant lyrics, ensures that the song will continue to be loved and cherished for generations to come. The song has resonated with people from all walks of life, striking a chord with those who have experienced the longing for a true home.

"People" is a song composed by Jule Styne with lyrics by Bob Merrill for the 1964 Broadway musical Funny Girl starring Barbra Streisand, who introduced the song. The song was released as a single in 1964 with "I Am Woman", a solo version of "You Are Woman, I Am Man", also from Funny Girl. "You'll Never Know", sometimes referred to as "You'll Never Know (Just How Much I Love You)" in later years, is a popular song with music written by Harry Warren and the lyrics by Mack Gordon. The song is based on a poem written by a young Oklahoma war bride named Dorothy Fern Norris.

Loretta Lynn's granddaughter Emmy Russell sings Ingrid Andress, 'More Hearts Than Mine' on American Idol

Certainly not one of CSN&Y’s best songs, but probably one that made them boatloads of cash. He wrote this nostalgic number bout his experiences growing up in the suitably small Seymour, Indiana. “Ok on the Albatross she [says], ‘you were sleeping soundly when they dragged you from your bed.’ Travis had to move out of his house when they started dating.

What inspired Burt Bacharach and Hal David to write “A House Is Not a Home”?

This song has a beautiful sentiment – that home isn’t any one place but more of the people you love the most, no matter where you are. More commonly known as ‘Take Me Home’ or ‘Country Roads’, this classic from the early 70s was one of John Denver’s most popular songs. "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)" is a song composed by Burt Bacharach, with lyrics by Hal David. It was originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1964, who charted at number 34 in the US Billboard Hot 100 with her version.

It was recorded during Warwick's five-week engagement at the Paris Olympia in January 1966 and was released shortly after the tour was completed. The liner of this LP is pink with three pictures of Warwick side-by-side, not unlike the Make Way for Dionne Warwick album two years earlier. Whether you live in a small town or big city, these songs will transport you home.

Warwick's version of "A House Is Not a Home" fared better in Canada, where it was a top 40 hit, peaking at #37. The ballad made the R&B top 10 in Cashbox by both Warwick and Benton, with neither artist specified as best seller. The album closer on the Foo Fighter’s sixth album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, this ballad featuring Dave Grohl on the piano and was the best song he’s ever written, according to Grohl. One of the finest songs ever written about missing home, Homeward Bound is a beautiful, autobiographical song. If you didn’t know, Taylor famously encourages her fans to figure out who the subjects of her songs are by leaving hints and Easter eggs.

They then take potshots at the Governor of Birmingham for his views (‘does your conscience bother you?’) in relation to his remarks about the civil rights movement. By 1969 the Beatles had all but finished working as a cohesive group and were a fractured, shadow of their former selves. The ’60s had taken its toll on the fab four, and many of the lyrics reflect on the passing of time, such as ‘you and I have memories, longer than the road that stretches out ahead’. But all in all, it’s about the joy of going back home and reconnecting ‘but these people raised me and I can’t wait to go home’. Ed Sheeran’s hit ‘Castle on the Hill’ is an autobiographical song about this very place, which one would assume is his home town of Framlingham in the UK.

Placing a decorative pot on an axis stops the eye for a moment in a delightful way. This is an often-repeated design element at Sissinghurst as well as at Hollister House. A patinaed kettle filled with pansies, below, asks you to step around before continuing through the archway. Having spaces in a garden divided by walls or hedges—so you catch only a glimpse into one from another through an opening—urges you on with a sense of surprise. From a distance, the arch should look like a set of ladders (one on each side) with a “shelf” on top. And if you’re not surgical with a saw, you can just skip the beams and keep the project simple.

Grow Roses All Season

As one of California’s most visited spots, the garden features more than 3,500 plants of 189 species. Roses in a relatively constrained environment (like this one) are also easier to care for, as all they need is regular watering, feeding, and maintenance. Some rose species can adhere to surfaces without any assistance or the need for a trellis. This dark green and pink rose hybrid looks incredible spread out against an old concrete staircase. A definite must for the ultimate old-English, vintage aesthetic. Just because walkways are functional doesn’t mean they can’t be an integral part of your landscape. Climbing roses are perfect for adorning trellises and arches, making the journey between destinations all the more enjoyable.

Climbing rose Garden Ideas

Intersperse roses with annuals and perennials like daisies, cosmos, and delphiniums for a burst of variety. Shrub roses are a bit less formal than hybrid tea roses but both will work. Ideas to update and improve your outdoor space with hardscaping elements. In this front garden, perennials such as catmint, delphinium, and hollyhocks mingle with roses. Use a rose-covered arbor in a side yard to define the transition between front and back yards.

When planting, dig a hole about 18 inches deep so the roots have space to grow. While you’re at it, consider also the type of garden you want to plant and your space. Before you rush to your nearest nursery to pick your ramblers and bushes, better take a look at your hardiness zone. You’ll have a better idea which rose varieties will survive easily in your garden. Plus, a bonus list of famous rose gardens from around the world.

The well-placed beds serve to create a walkway between hundreds of beautiful blooms. Great for a larger landscape, be warned that multiple rose beds are pretty high maintenance. However, they’re worth it, especially with how romantic and aesthetic this garden looks.

Everything about that experience was magical, and you’d better believe I stopped to smell the flowers. Before 1902, the famous White House Rose Garden contained a stable. It was during Theodore Roosevelt’s administration that the First Lady Edith Roosevelt had it made into a dream-like colonial rose garden.

You could choose a palette of pastels, jewel-like tones, or hot pinks and corals – whatever garden color scheme suits your taste. And if you love the look but want to keep costs down, learning how to take rose cuttings is an easy way to get lots of new plants for free. To elevate a cottage garden patio, try planting roses all around the borders. This garden in Surrey is home to more than 1,500 different varieties of roses.

Allow your path to go several feet from your door before you reach a central rose garden. A rose garden doesn’t have to be expensive or hard to build. Our goal with this post was to show you that a little bit of work, patience, and dedication are all you’ll ever need to successfully grow such a garden. There are hundreds of rose species on planet Earth—pick the ones you like, get the soil ready, and start planting!

Thankfully, Warwick and her producer fought to include it on her album and it went on to become a classic ballad. The song was not nominated for any major awards, but it did become a commercial and critical success. It reached the Top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became one of Warwick’s signature songs. While each artist’s version of the song has its own merits, Dionne Warwick’s original recording is widely considered to be the definitive version. Her iconic vocals perfectly capture the raw emotion and longing at the heart of the song.

Another version of the song, by Brook Benton, which was the version that appeared in the film, was released at nearly the same time.

Each artist adds their own unique interpretation to the song, showcasing its enduring popularity and universal appeal. Whether you're redecorating, remodeling, or finding a new home, you can blast songs that perfectly capture fresh starts like "Welcome to New York" by Taylor Swift. Songs about home can be about more than a physical place—they can also be about the people you love and surround yourself with. Take Leon Bridges's "Coming Home." However you feel about where you came from or where you live now, we've rounded up the best 56 songs about home you'll want to play on repeat. London-based singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka blend of rootsy vintage soul and funk is one a thing to behold. This song from his first album is a wonderful little acoustic number with gorgeous, longing lyrics ‘Home again, One day I know, I’ll feel home again’.

What impact has “A House Is Not a Home” had on contemporary music?

She still thinks she brings down all her romantic partners and is a burden,” one more user said. “I might be crazy but…why does the albatross feel like her writing about what people were saying to Travis when they first started,” another person guessed. “‘You were sleeping soundly when they dragged you from your bed.’ Travis had to move out of his house when they started dating. She still thinks she brings down all her romantic partners and is a burden,” one fan speculated.

However, it wasn’t until Luther Vandross released his rendition of the song in 1981 that it truly became a timeless classic. The powerful lyrics and Vandross’ emotive vocals resonate deeply with listeners, evoking a sense of longing and nostalgia. Vandross's version was sampled by Kanye West for "Slow Jamz", from Twista's 2004 album Kamikaze , as well as Kanye's own 2004 studio album The College Dropout . A House Is Not a Home is a 1964 drama film loosely based on the 1953 autobiography by madam Polly Adler. The song written for the film by Burt Bacharach and Hal David has become a standard. Written in the album “Never Too Much” by Luther Vandross, this song is one of the more famous tracks. Aside from Eydie Gorme, numerous artists have covered A House Is Not a Home over the years.

What other songs did Burt Bacharach and Hal David write together?

The song would later be covered by several artists, such as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and most famously Luther Vandross. Lyrically, it’s also a masterpiece of missed opportunity, typical of songwriter Morrissey. Noted for Ginger Baker’s highly innovative percussion, and some classic lines ‘I’m wasted and I can’t find my way home’, it reflected on the grueling, drug-laden life of a rock band on the road. Jack Johnson has a knack for writing songs that bring a lump to your throat just like that.

There’s also a duet version of the song featuring vocals from Jennifer Nettles of the American duo Sugarland. Written by Steve Winwood, this classic track from supergroup Blind Faith (which included Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker) is one of those timeless masterpieces. Written by Roger Waters and appearing on the classic The Wall album, it’s an autobiographical portrayal of life on the road and the Water’s lonely life of isolation behind his ‘self-created mental wall’. There he is, holed up in a hotel room with only his possessions and ’13 channels of shit on the TV to choose from’.

Initially, police only said they were working at a home that matched the address provided for the 'American Idol' alum on public records. The Media Collective talent agency that represented Hundley confirmed her death Friday. Franklin Police Department officials said Monday that no foul play is suspected in the death of Christian singer Mandisa — four days after she was found dead in her home. It has been recorded by numerous male and female vocalists, instrumentalists and ensembles.

Another song named ‘Our House’ recorded some 20 years later by British ska-loving band Madness. This chart-topping track in the UK was the only Madness song to reach top 10 status in America. Others are about returning home (for example, Ed Sheeran’s Castle on the Hill) and a celebration of where you’re from. As you’d expect, quite a few are about leaving home (a pretty big event in most people’s lives). Despite this, lyrical analysis is entirely subjective, and there’s no way of actually confirming who Taylor is singing about in her songs — unless she reveals the info herself.

Eydie Gorme’s rendition of A House Is Not a Home was released in 1964, the same year the song was written. Her soulful interpretation resonated with listeners and solidified the song as a beloved classic. Yes, A House Is Not a Home is often regarded as a classic in the realm of soulful ballads.

La Brea Ave, which features key elements designed by James Turrell, will become Pace’s new west coast flagship. The 15,000-square-foot Los Angeles gallery space, which occupies the site of a 1940s Californian auto showroom, features a permanent Skyspace by Turrell unique to the city. The indoor-outdoor design and expansive courtyard will become a site for Pace Live public programming, as well as outdoor sculpture exhibitions and other events, cementing the space as a fixture in the local art scene.

Our Latest Projects

It’s been a roller coaster project, but I’ve loved every second of it. Working on and off with the project for about two years, the Maggie Griffin Design team created a nature-inspired aesthetic that merges older vintage pieces with modern art and fabrics. To achieve the right look, Maggie also employed a color scheme that includes greens, blues, and earth tones galore — just the right shades to honor the Gainesville landscape.

Pace and Kayne Griffin, which has operated in Southern California for over a decade, have a strong history of collaboration. Over the past five years, the two galleries have developed an unprecedented working partnership, after James Turrell first brought them together, sensing a natural synergy. Perhaps one of the most eye-catching features of the home is its exterior vignettes — intimate spaces for sunset-viewing, watching leaves fall to the forest floor, and sipping a glass of wine as the autumn chill rolls in.

Comfortable swivel chairs are tucked into a long reading nook that provides a welcoming space to wind down at the end of the day. As Managing Partners at Pace, Griffin and Kayne will have active roles on the global leadership team, with Griffin involved in client relationships and strategic development, and Kayne lending her expertise to artist support and new business development. With a combined 40 years of experience on the West Coast, Griffin and Kayne will support Pace’s efforts to provide opportunities for its artists in that region. The existing Kayne Griffin staff, including Griffin and Kayne, will officially join the Pace team starting in April. Asking for a list of expectations, a few favorite images of our work, and having a conversation with the potential client has helped to provide direction and focus for us and for our clients. For those who are starting out, there is such a learning curve when it comes to dealing with tricky situations, and I am happy to have gotten over some of those humps, after all that time (I hope!)!

From state parks, nature centers, and a botanical garden to visual arts centers and historic monuments, Gainesville, GA, has scenery in spades. Not to be confused with the town in Florida of the same name, this Gainesville is a significantly less-populated area that boasts that wonderfully charming Southern small-town feel. It even earned the moniker “Hospitality Capital of the World” when it hosted the 1996 Olympic rowing and kayaking events. Situated by Lake Lanier at the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills, Gainesville offers a heavily wooded area with outdoor adventure, water recreation galore, and homes worth putting on your radar. Founded in 2015, Southern Home showcases beautiful homes that will appeal to every design aesthetic. We canvas the Southern states to bring you some of the area’s most inviting and interesting homes, as well as the talented architects, designers, and homeowners behind them.

We are grateful to work with exceptional builders, skilled architects, proficient vendors, and talented tradesmen in the design community. While just a few short months have passed since we welcomed friends, family, and clients through our doors, the process for my office and studio has been in the works for quite some time. For the better part of the last year, I’ve been working on the planning and renovation of the office space and studio for Maggie Griffin Design. While that process was completed in a little under 5 months, my husband, David, and I have been scouting potential houses for me to renovate for my office space for roughly two years.

Comfortable chairs flank the front entryway, a built-in porch banquette offers a spot to curl up with a good book, and a swing lends itself to an afternoon nap in the sunshine. A covered deck with a fireplace provides a dedicated space for outdoor living, complete with a stone fireplace, plush couches, and a view of the wooded expanse. What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career? For any woman starting her career in interior design, its important to hone in which areas you’d like to specialize. It’s not as glamorous as it all seems sometimes… there’s a lot of schlepping, of finessing clients, and dealing with logistics. A California-cool color palette with a Southern spin was the design goal for this home in Brookhaven—a bustling suburb of Atlanta.

To bring this dream to life, the homeowners hired designer Maggie Griffin of Maggie Griffin Design who then selected natural fibers, neutral textures, sage green, and plenty of white to create a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere. The owners had a few existing pieces they wanted to incorporate into the home, but they mostly gave Griffin carte blanche with the interiors. As you might already know, the past few months have brought several exciting changes for me and my business, Maggie Griffin Design. It’s a little white cottage full of big ideas, and today, I am thrilled to share a peek at the before and after of the exterior of the house. Pace Founder and Chairman Arne Glimcher began visiting the Los Angeles in the 1960s, cultivating longstanding relationships with Robert Irwin and other major artists from the region. From 1995 to 2000, Pace maintained a gallery space, under PaceWildenstein, on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The original screened-in porch needed some TLC, so while we were at it during construction, we changed it to an open airport with a pretty blue ceiling in Benjamin Moore’s Ice Cap. We couldn’t miss an opportunity to have a traditional Southern “Haint blue” ceiling! With the help of Brian Hughes of The Simpson Company, we worked together to find a space for me. In fact, when David and Brian found the cottage that is now mine, it wasn’t even for sale, and the family who owned it hadn’t planned to sell it just yet. However, David and Brian are a wealth of knowledge, and a powerhouse real estate team, so I trusted them completely.

As a college student, Maggie had the pleasure of studying abroad in Florence, Italy where she studied The History of Fabrics as well as Retail Design and Merchandising. Equipped with a command of architecture along with a mastery of textiles, Maggie uses her knowledge of scale and symmetry and her understanding of modern sensibility to turn houses into homes and dreams into realities. Perfect for relaxing and taking respite, the bedrooms were intentionally designed with a Zen-like quality. Luxe, crisp white linens dress the bed, while embroidered draperies cover the windows for softness.

Two other people had also been hospitalized in stable condition after the blast. “From the moment DEP was called in to investigate, our experts have worked tirelessly alongside county officials and partner agencies to aid in identifying the cause,” said DEP Secretary Rich Negrin. State investigators are now searching for stray gas near the site of a home explosion in Plum, Allegheny County on Saturday, Aug. 12 that killed six people. The cause of the explosion remained under investigation, which was expected to take some time, officials said. Two other adults were in critical condition after the blast that occurred minutes after 8 p.m.

The Allegheny county medical examiner’s office is expected to provide additional information about the deceased victims. However, he wasn't able to get the family's three cats and hopes they are all right. "It's just tragic, I mean, it looks like a war zone — it looks like a bomb hit our neighborhood and it's just unfortunate," Kolankowski said. "I was just with some of the neighbors yesterday, right, and now this happens." Pottstown Fire Chief Frank Hand said the aftermath of the explosion was “devastating.” Two houses were destroyed and more were damaged.

After recovering and checking on his son, he went outside where he said a woman told him another woman had been upstairs and a man was in the basement. The other woman later emerged covered in white ash, but the individual in the basement had not yet exited, he said. The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the county fire marshal's office along with borough and county law enforcement. Imbarlina warned that the investigation would be a "slow and long process" that would include a lot of forensic testing and could last "months if not years." George Emanuele, who lives three houses down from the home that exploded, said he and a neighbor went to the home after the explosion and dragged a man laying in the backyard away from the scene, he told the Tribune-Review.

Casey and Keegan, who lived on nearby Brookside Drive, were at the house at 141 Rustic Ridge Drive when it exploded, the family told the Trib. In addition to those killed, two people were being treated for injuries, Pottstown Borough Manager Justin Keller said. One of them was undergoing surgery for unknown injuries and the other was in critical but stable condition, he said.

The police chief of the community of Plum, Lanny Conley, said the bodies of four adults and one adolescent were recovered after the blast shortly before 10.30am on Saturday. "This is certainly a sad, sad day and a sad time, for not just the folks in Plum but all the folks in the community and in this region," said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. Officials were back at the scene Sunday morning, and a news conference was scheduled for noon, the Facebook post said. After he recovered and checked on his son, Kolankowski went outside, where a woman told him that another woman had been upstairs and that a man was in the basement. The other woman emerged later covered in white ash, but the person in the basement hadn’t yet exited, he said. Downs said officials don't expect to have information about the cause of the explosion "for quite some time."

Residents of the area where the explosion happened described a chaotic aftermath. “I am in constant communication with Governor Shapiro, who has expressed his unwavering support for the Plum community and for the use of all available investigative measures. At the Governor’s request, an extensive amount of testing has been completed. Over the next few days additional testing will be conducted and shared with the public appropriately,” added Negrin.

Imbarlina warned that the investigation would be a “slow and long process” that would include a lot of forensic testing and could last “months if not years”. Six people were killed, including a child, in a Pennsylvania house explosion over the weekend that caused multiple injuries, leveled two other homes and damaged at least a dozen residences, according to authorities. Fifty-seven firefighters were treated for "minor issues" at the scene and released, Steve Imbarlina, assistant chief of fire/emergency medical services at Allegheny County Emergency Service, told reporters Sunday afternoon. Steve Imbarlina, the assistant chief for Allegheny County emergency services, said that two of the injured people had been released from the hospital and a third was in critical condition on Sunday afternoon. Three homes on Rustic Ridge Drive were leveled by the explosion, and about a dozen others were damaged, county officials said at a news conference Saturday night. The cause of the explosion is under investigation by Plum and county law enforcement agencies and the county fire marshal’s office.

When you’re starting to work on a design system, you do it with the intent to build something that lasts, a system that teams love to use and that saves them precious time in their daily work. However, many attempts to build a design system end up in great libraries that don’t get used as much as you had hoped. But how do you create a design system that becomes an established part of your organization’s workflow? SuperFriendly published a practical workbook in which they take you and your team from zero to a design system that lasts — in 90 days. It’s helpful to explain common use cases for each element, as well as how not to use them, to avoid inconsistencies in the final design. Inclusive products allow fair and equal access to all users, regardless of their ability. Design systems should have inbuilt accessibility best practices that meet WCAG accessibility standards. This considers users who experience challenges while using products in a traditional way and might require assistive tools, such as a screen reader. Even though a design system contains accessible components and elements, designers must still consider how they work together in order to design a holistic, accessible experience.

Common challenges of building a design system

Consistency helps to make products user friendly, and any design system standardizes patterns across products and channels. When a user interacts with your interface, they see design elements, and they will look for the same patterns across other platforms. LogRocket lets you replay users' product experiences to visualize struggle, see issues affecting adoption, and combine qualitative and quantitative data so you can create amazing digital experiences. A popular open source tool for developing UI components within a design system is Storybook. Its main feature is the ability to build UI components in an isolated sandbox environment, which enables developers to render different variations of a component by using props and mock data. This reduces the need to spin up the entire app to test the component, saving substantial development time.

It explores several ways to improve accessibility — from the immediate task of building accessible products to creating teams of people that underscore an Accessibility Beyond Compliance mindset. Shopify’s design system Polaris maps out guidelines for how to approach data visualization and defines five core traits for successful data visualizations. Do’s and don’ts for different data visualizations deliver practical examples. Culture Amp features helpful further reading resources for each type of data visualization they define in their design system.

Its design system fundamentals cover component blueprints, tokens, design guidelines, and tools. A design system helps UX teams and personnel share experiences within the product team. Firstly, it is a perfect reference for junior-level designers, and secondly, it is an important guideline for developers or product managers.

Spectrum also includes open-source implementations with detailed usage guidelines. While it doesn’t visually represent the company’s redesign, the series The Way We Build, published on the company’s design blog, provides keen insights into design systems, innovation, and collaboration. Since its release, Google has added extensive theming capabilities to Material, allowing designers and developers to start with a robust baseline and extend it to meet the needs of their brand.

As you’re building your system, be sure to keep the end users — both your engineers and your customers — front of mind. You can make your design system part of your workflow by building it in a visual-first environment like Webflow’s. For example, when you change the color of a button in Webflow’s Style Manager, that change will ripple across the CSS behind the scenes and change other buttons with the same class too — it’s your design system in action. There are two main types of patterns — functional and perceptual — that work together to form the building blocks of your designs.

Polaris conveniently lays out the different variants of each UI component across the top of the page to allow users to easily view and compare to decide on the best one for their application. This convenience enhances the efficiency within a designer’s workflow, allowing them to quickly make informative design decisions. Even when companies try to create their design system, specific issues and consistency disconnects can still happen, especially when maintaining all the elements, documentation and code. Bring all interactive components from your design system to the editor, build fully interactive prototypes, and keep your designs consistent. When it comes to visual elements like icons and illustrations, many companies have difficulties finding the right balance between being on-brand, useful, and scalable.

The design system acts as a single source of truth for Audi’s global product teams. Its products range from websites to in-vehicle applications, each with unique user interface requirements. Their design system offers a library of brand identity guidelines and components to ensure consistent branding and user experience regardless of the platform. Carbon also hosts a library of UI components, patterns, and data visualizations for various use cases.

They offer everything from business consulting to software development services to IT hosting & management, to software products to hardware (servers, mainframes, storage), and even financing. Material design system allows you to directly download design component source files for the most popular design software (like Sketch and Figma). They also include Material studies which demonstrate how components and theming can be used to create beautiful, usable apps. Here is our top 10 list (in no particular order) of the greatest of the greats, what their design systems include and how you can use them to learn from and inspire your own designs. What we know about the Pennsylvania home explosion that killed 6

Fire officials say home explosions are not uncommon in the county, and if you smell gas, report it immediately. "There's people that burn a fire and little fire pits, maybe something caught on fire, but not an entire house," said neighbor Logan Lambert. While at the scene, a male reported having burn injuries and was taken to the hospital for further treatment. Upon their arrival, crews found the home engulfed in flames and requested a 2nd-alarm alert to be sent out.

UPDATE: Lancaster City Police investigating shooting

Emergency responders reported people trapped under debris after the blast leveled one house and left two others engulfed in flames, county spokesperson Amie Downs said. Crews from at least 18 fire departments worked to douse the flames with the help of water tankers from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. The cause of the blast — which destroyed three structures and damaged at least a dozen others — remains under investigation, but officials have said Oravitz and his wife, Heather, were having issues with their hot water tank.

Two were stable when they were transported and were released, and the third was in critical condition, they said. They remain in critical condition at a nearby hospital and have been identified as Eugene White, 44, and Kristina Matuzsan, 32. The blast originated at a home on Hale Street near Butler Avenue around 8 p.m. “This is certainly a sad, sad day and a sad time, for not just the folks in Plum but all the folks in the community and in this region,” said Allegheny county executive Rich Fitzgerald. In all, 57 firefighters were treated on scene for minor issues — many of them for heat exhaustion.

A drone photo of the scene showed a lot in a dense neighborhood littered with debris where a house once stood and neighboring structures looking unstable. The explosion was felt miles away, witnesses said. A company spokesperson said Wednesday that it had completed additional system testing with the Fire Marshal’s office and the state Public Utility Commission, meaning it can now begin restoring gas service. Company technicians will be going door to door to conduct a safety check and relight customers’ appliances, the spokesperson said. State officials had previously ruled out natural gas from an abandoned underground mine as a cause.

The state Public Utility Commission and local utilities also were at the scene. First responders said there were people trapped under debris, two houses on fire, multiple houses damaged and it appeared “as if one house had exploded,” authorities said. Pennsylvania fire officials are still investigating the cause of a house explosion which left five people, including a child, dead and several other homes damaged, officials said Monday. Four buildings — three for storage and one work facility — were destroyed and several military vehicles damaged, Col. Youeng Sokhon, an army officer at the site, said in a brief report to army chief Gen. Mao Sophan, posted on social media. Photos of the base showed the damaged structures in a large field, apparently with no civilian structures close by.
